Brewsters Millions is, in my opinion, a classic 80’s film. A minor league baseball player has to waste $30m in 30 days in order to inherit $300m; however he’s not allowed to tell anyone about the $300m deal. The story was unique, even if the ending was predictable, with the lovable loser overcoming great odds to succeed.

The great thing about the film is its stars, Richard Pryor and John Candy, 2 of the funniest men of the decade. Granted, you won’t be wowed by Oscar Winning performances, but it is a fun movie with loads of laughs. In what may have been Pryor’s best role, and Candy delivers his usually charming, lovable sidekick role to perfection, you can’t help but be entertained by them. They have a natural chemistry and its easy to see how much fun they had together.

Although is quite firmly rooted in the 80’s when it was made, I think its timeless and does not feel dated, except for the maybe cloths.

My first impression of Shutter Island (based on previews I had seen) was that it was a fantasy/horror film, but its really a Mystery/ Drama film. Set in the 50’s, U.S. Marshal Teddy Daniels (Leonardo DiCaprio) is investigating the disappearance of a murderess who escaped from a hospital for the criminally insane and is presumed to be hiding on the remote Shutter Island.

The film takes some interesting twists and turns as the morality of asylums and their treatment are explored. I found the arguments interesting as the characters each had their own view of what was ethical, and as Daniels investigation progresses, its clear things are not what they appear.

As strong as the story was, the cast also did a wonderful job, especially Ben Kingsley and Max Von Sydow, as hospital Doctors who oversaw the treatment of patients. The film also had a lot of critically acclaimed (but less known) actors in small but crucial roles or cameos, like Jackie Earle Haley, Michelle Williams, Elias Koteas and more.

Very good film, I would be interested in watching it again, because there were lot’s of subtle moments that really captured you and got you thinking. I think its one of those movies that has a great ending, but even if you knew the ending, it would be worth seeing just to explore how they got there. I also found the ending compelling because it could be interpreted different ways. Its a very good film, but its not a light fluffy movie, there is a lot of depth.

The Spy Next Door is a family action/comedy film about an ex-spy who tries to win over his girlfriends kids by babysitting them while she is away. Initially, they dislike him, but once the kids are targeted by a former rival spy they begin to trust him. Not the most original concept, but Jackie Chan is ideal for the part, he brings a dead pan comedy style along with his martial arts moves and daring stunts.

What I liked was that the story, while predictable, didn’t try to wow you with any twists or shocks, but allowed the actors to show their skill, especially Chan. The kids are cute, and deliver a lot of the comedy punch, along with the clownish “bad guys”, making it appealing to kids as well.

If you want a thriller, or something you’ve never seen before, you won’t like this one at all. But, if you want a film that is appropriate for all ages and will keep you entertained, its a good pick. Plus, stay tuned through the credits to see some of Jackie’s crazy, and often hilarious bloopers.

The Reader is a Drama set in Post-WWII Germany that asks the question - How far would you go to protect a secret? This is 2 stories, told in flashback sequences - the first focuses on young man (Ralph Fiennes) coming of age after a brief but meaningful sexual encounter with an older women (Kate Winslett). The second, told from present time, tries to make Winslett’s character sympathetic after it is discovers she was a Nazi employee and part of concentration camps years earlier. Fiennes character, now grown up and having lost touch with her for years, confronts a survivor of the camp and tries to decide if he will help Winslett or not. Is she the women he fell in love with and influenced him years earlier, or the monster she is accused of being?

The film was nominated for 4 Oscars and won the Oscar for Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role (Winslett), deservedly so. She was brilliant in the film, as she goes from being a bit of an enigma, to despised then the writers attempt to redeem her character. The story is one that is slow and deliberate to allow you to soak in the information, study the characters and lets you decide how you feel about the ending. There are many quiet, but intense scenes that are very thought-provoking as the film moves forward.

It was a movie that originally, I was a little down on, but I found myself thinking about it for days afterwords, which caused me to rethink it and really become fascinated with it. Not a movie you would want to see as escapism, but if you want to think and challenge your moral values, it certainly does that.

Clip - This is a great example of the subtlety of the film, this scene seems so insignificant, but in the contex of the film, it plays a major part in foreshadowing.

From Paris with Love is an action/comedy, reminiscent of Lethal Weapon or Die Hard, with 2 opposite agents (Travolta’s veteran wise cracking tough guy to Rhys-Meyers youthful, serious, by the book agent) combining to bring down a terrorist attempt.

The film is fun, fast-paced and laced with some witty one-liners. There are some plot twists to add some suspense/mystery to the film, but its really a “cop buddy” film. The action is off-the-wall (IE totally unbelievable) but definitely fun to watch. I liked the chemistry between the 2 actors, and though this was a great role for Travolta, who shows he is still good enough to do action movies and added his quirky funny side to the role as well. Plus, there is a GREAT homage to Pulp Fiction, that I totally loved.

Admittedly, the story was pretty weak (especially the ending), but the action scenes were cool and the quick wit of Travolta made it a fun movie for me. If you want a plausible, realistic spy thriller, this isn’t it. If you love hardcore action flicks with lot’s of gun fights and explosions, you’ll be happy with it.

Let’s Kick Some Past with Hot Tub Time Machine! I liked this movie a lot, it was fun and original, with lot’s of 80’s Pop culture references sprinkled throughout. I would say this movie is targeted directly at those of us who were teens in the 80’s, it will made the subtle jokes and references that much more enjoyable if you actually experienced that time frame (mid to late 80’s).

The script was good, featuring 4 down on their luck guys who take a trip to one of their old haunts in order to feel better about their lives and end up, thanks to a Hot Tub Time machine, back in the 80’s when they were young and wild and free. What really made this film so good was the chemistry between the 4 stars. It was refreshing to see John Cusack, who is more known as a serious actor, in this type of comedy. The fact that he was one of the biggest actors to come out of the 80’s is somewhat eluded to as his character paralleled that in the film. Rob Corddry (The Heartbreak Kid , What Happens In Vegas, W.) and Craig Robinson (The Goods, Miss March, Zack and Miri Make a Porno), 2 character actors who you will recognize from lot’s of other films, but have never been stars, although that may change, are excellent as well. Plus, there are several familiar faces from the era that make this movie so unbelievably fun to watch, especially Chevy Chase (Deal Of The Century, Fletch and SNL), who has a great cameo as the Hot Tub Repair man, which adds to the 80’s Nostalgia.

Now this is a comedy, and a somewhat low-brow one with some crude humor at times, but it was enjoyable none the less. While it wasn’t as good as The Hangover (a movie I hear it often compared to), it was worth seeing, especially if you want to just turn off your brain and escape for an hour and a half.
